Email is getting out of hand. The average worker sends 130 emails a week and receives 368. They receive 40 and send 11 even on weekends. Most people respond within 24 hours and are quicker on Monday and Tuesday, and can spend up to 8.8 hours a week on email, which is just under two hours per day. But what’s more telling of the email takeover is that 63% of remote workers check their work email during weekends, and 34% check work emails while they’re on vacation.

It’s probably not your job to send emails. But when you do, it’s costing deep work and leaving you with less time to make a difference. Receiving one breaks your chain of thought, puts you in a different headspace, and leaves you wondering whether to respond now or get back to what you were doing. Distraction is the enemy of getting meaningful stuff done.

Batch your responses once every few days and let ChatGPT help you out. Don’t be at the mercy of unread emails; craft perfect responses in a fraction of the time. Copy, paste and edit the square brackets in ChatGPT, and keep the same chat window open so the context carries through.
