OpenAI Is Adding “Group Chats” To ChatGPT. Your Job Won’t Be The Same
Nov 17, 2025
There’s a new ChatGPT feature coming to a workplace near you very soon.
Right now, OpenAI is currently piloting a new feature that could fundamentally transform how we communicate, engage, and progress our careers at work: “Group chats” in ChatGPT.
This is yet another reason why, if you’re not already conversant with ChatGPT or other LLMs, you might seriously fall behind at your job. “Group chats” in ChatGPT could be coming to an employer, department, or job near you.
Instead of just assisting individuals within teams, ChatGPT is being adapted to improve team workflows and cross-functional collaboration, much like Slack, Teams, Asana, and other cross-collaboration project management tools.
For executives who've been asking, how do we actually deploy AI within team workflows, this might just be the answer.
And for professionals seeking to prove their AI skills to employers, this is exactly the sort of change you need.
But to be clear, “group chats” is currently in pilot mode, which means that if you’re in the United States or Europe or any other part of the world except Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, you won't have access to this feature yet.
As OpenAI usually does, it trials its new feature tool or model with a small group of testers before deciding to roll out to its users across its plans. The whole idea is that it will take on the feedback from the users in its pilot and use it to improve their model.
What Is “Group Chats” In ChatGPT?
I first came across “Group Chats In ChatGPT” feature randomly when I ran into this LinkedIn post by Ben Valentin, an AI start-up founder. I then decided to investigate for myself and this is what I found on OpenAI’s website:
“Group chats make it possible to bring people, and ChatGPT, into the same conversation…Group chats also make collaboration at work or school easier. You can draft an outline or research a new topic together. Share articles, notes, and questions, and ChatGPT can help summarize and organize information.”
This is the ultimate cross-functional collaboration hack and it will go a long way towards boosting ease of communication and project transparency in the workplace. As Valentin puts it, this new feature soon to be rolled out, will unlock:
- Meetings that stay on track
- Faster alignment
- Clean records of every decision
- Stronger collaboration
- Less wasted time
How Will OpenAI’s “Group Chats” Impact My Job?
This is the ultimate productivity hack and it will shape corporate culture. Here are a few ways I anticipate this will impact your job:
- AI will move from a one-person secret to an entire team collaborating with and relying on it.
- If you’re a leader or manager, you’ll continue to need AI competency and AI management skills to keep the guardrails and ensure this new ChatGPT feature actually enhances productivity, instead of becoming yet another digital burden or distraction.
- This is a chance for you to show off your AI-literacy skills (in a good way of course), and educate your co-workers on how to prompt effectively and know when to use AI to delegate.
- This will definitely help with workload reduction for busy and overworked project and ops teams, especially in extremely busy periods with competing priorities.
- Managers will need to brief their teams before rolling it out so everyone is aware of when to use it, in what situations it would be acceptable, and when to add human judgement to the mix or occasionally, rely on human intuition alone.
- AI competence will be standard for all roles. For job descriptions, if you want to be “in” and fit within the corporate culture, you’ll need to at least know how to use collaborative Gen AI tools like ChatGPT Group Chats.
How To Use ChatGPT Group Chats
Here are some examples of potential use cases where ChatGPT’s “group chats” feature will pose the highest impact:
- At a leadership offsite or virtual leadership/management meeting, leaders and managers can build their strategy for the upcoming quarter/year, collaboratively, using ChatGPT to regulate the conversation and provide suggestions, feedback, risk evaluation, and market insights.
- For team brainstorming sessions, ChatGPT can kick off the creative thinking process and ask the deep questions no one is asking.
- Within HR talent acquisition teams, the ChatGPT "group chats" feature could be used in collaborating together on candidate information and scoring results, job description and job ad creation, gaining insights from interview notes, etc.
There’s so much potential to be explored here, and it’s really exciting. We’ll begin to see plenty more examples of how organizations are integrating AI into their workflows, the success they’re experiencing with this tool, and how job descriptions and team roles are shifting, once the pilot is eventually expanded to a full-scale launch across ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro users.
How Valentin ended his LinkedIn post speaks volumes about what the workplace will look like in 2026 and beyond:
"The future isn’t humans or AI. It is humans and AI inside the same conversation."
