Researchers to use artificial intelligence to save endangered whales in B.C.
Dec 14, 2020
An artificial intelligence computer will eventually be able to detect specific whale sounds to protect them from fatal ship strikes. A system developed by Simon Fraser University will monitor sounds received by a network of hydrophones -- microphones designed to be used underwater -- and will ultimately recognize which calls belong to which whales. The algorithm will then alert vessels in real time to slow down or change course if a whale is nearby.
